The Lil' Paris is Burning Ball is a project organized by Sens Pozitiv since 2019, coordinated by Alina Dumitriu, Paula Dunker and Eugen Radescu. Balls flourished in the 1980s as an underground movement of the LGBTQ+ community in the US. But the first ball took place in '67, in Harlem. Drastically affected by poverty, marginalization and the AIDS epidemic, for which there was still no cure, queer Hispanic and black people built a safe space where they could express themselves freely. From there, these events became a form of radical resistance against homophobia, transphobia and racism. Balls have gone mainstream in recent years, but this time, community members are taking center stage, no longer in the underground.
